I heard about MooEditable in the Mootools blog July roundup. I really like
MooEditable. Being that it is written in MooTools is HUGE plus for me. I've forked it to work on upgrades to use in my CMS. This is my second attempt at working on developing an HTML editor ... the first one was waaaayyyy back in the early 2000s and it wasn't…

MooEditable. Being that it is written in MooTools is HUGE plus for me. I've forked it to work on upgrades to use in my CMS. This is my second attempt at working on developing an HTML editor ... the first one was waaaayyyy back in the early 2000s and it wasn't pretty.

So far I've rewritten formatBlock and added a overlay button to add snippets of text into the editor (useful for me when wanting users to add mail merge fields into the editor). I also wrote a pretty robust link button.

Please try it out and let me know what you think:
http://ascribedata.com/moo/editable/

Here's the fork:
http://github.com/tru10000/mooeditable/

The link tooltip doesn't work properly in IE once the editor content scrolls down. onScroll doesn't seem to activate in IE. Can anyone suggest a solution?

The next thing I want to do is write a custom image button.

Also, I personally like and rather than and . Is
there any way to customize the execCommand('bold') and execCommand('italic') to use and instead of and ? If not, I guess I could write custom buttons. I'm working on a mobile app and am looking for an experienced javascript developer. If you have played extensively with the existing javascript frameworks such as jQuery and Mootools but are skilled enough to roll your own to make a dedicated framework that is as small and fast as possible then you've got the skills I'm looking for. Please contact me if you're interested and available.

I worked with a great engineer on the original Mobile Safari for iPhone 1.0. He's since moved on and did this framework which is slick as snot. 280slide.com was done using Cappuccino. Anyway, just a head's up to the js developers out there. Thanks, B.

In the old days, people hacked their own javascript or downloaded disparate scripts from one scripting site or another. Today it's much more efficient and elegant to code a site with Web 2.0 features using a Javascript library or framework.

Which one do you use? And why do you like it?
I use Mootools for almost all my Javascript now. I like Mootools because it's lightweight, has fantastic animation capability and the ease at which it does AJAX and selects elements. Mootools also has a large and active community of developer which have released a cornucopia of nifty mootools based classes which you can use on your sites. Here's a sampling:

I use the YUI Compressor for javascript files. I formerly used JSmin, but now I just use YUIC. What's your preference? If so, why?

Today I hacked a simple PHP script to recursively poll through a folder of javascript files organized within folders in my application and run them through YUIC and save them to a separate folder for publishing to the production server. With 391 files in 52 folders, this is a time saver! Previously I would call up the Windows cmd window and do them manually one-by-one as I needed. If anyone is interested in the code for the script, I'd be happy to share.

My next step is to automate preparing my application for deployment by writing a script to call IonCube to encrypt PHP files and call YUIC to minify both javascript and CSS files.
