Aloha!  Just wanted to introduce myself, my name is Jeremy Yadao.  I'm a senior at the Art Institute of Portland majoring in the game art and design program. I'm originally from Hilo Hawaii. Im a 3D modeler and texture artist and I also do concept art aswell.  I work in photoshop, 3DS Max, Maya and the Unreal engine.  I did a Sony mentorship production where I was a level designer and a texture monkey.  I would love to return home for some work, but it seems like work might be limited.  Any info would be appreciated!

Gorm! I'm so glad to hear you'll be at the Hawaii Geek Meet next Sunday, April 17! Hope other game developers can turn out, and hear about your efforts to start a Honolulu chapter of the International Game Developers Association. See you then!

Hi All,

Just to let you know that we have started to arrange some networking meetings for local game devs where we can hang out, network and share knowledge and opportunities.

The first one will be a board game night. Join up here:

Sorry to hear that guys. This is such as rollercoaster industry.

If you just want to hang out with like-minded people, or try creating a new and different game prototype that you couldn't before, then you are very welcome at our Honolulu site for the Global Game Jam http://www.techhui.com/events/global-game-jam-honolulu / globalgamejam.org

Good luck!,

In case anyone hadn't heard, Avatar Reality went through a restructuring last on the 14th.  Development on Blue Mars ceased and the majority of the company was laid off.  Avatar is still working on a mobile app as a companion to Blue Mars and the Blue Mars servers are still running.

Meanwhile a number of us are now looking for work so if anyone needs designers, engineers, qa, or project management let me know and I'll get you in touch with the right people.

Hi Ryan - The first four of the five companies Traci listed are intertwined. The founder of Aloha Island is Mark Loughridge, cofounder of Foundation 9, which is the world's largest independent game developer. Mark currently co-chairs Avatar's board along with Henk Rogers. Its a small rock :-)

Last month, the Entertainment Software Association said Hawaii's video game industry was contributing $23 million to the local economy. And that value came from five video game developers. Local geek Traci Toguchi tracked down the list of those five companies.

Three of them are essentially the same company.

There has to be more. Heck, I'd include mobile game developers for sure. I'd love to hear names of other video game firms in Hawaii, if you can think of any.

We also have Blue Planet Software, the company that does Tetris online and a number of other Tetris games.
Atlantis Cyberspace that does serious games for army combat training.
And I know we've got a new studio working on a game for Facebook but I can't think of their name off hand.

Hi Tonu - Yes. Avatar Reality is a venture backed company that has a virtual world platform called Blue Mars. Its something like Second Life on steroids and it supports easy creation of games within the world via scripting. Theorian recently released a great iPhone game called NanoMechs. There are also a number of talented independent game developers in this group.
