I started using FreeBSD around April 1994 and my first install was FreeBSD 1.1.5 (yes I know I made a mistake on my first post it was supposed to be 1.1.5) I believe FreeBSD 1.0 was released late 1993. The 90's saw three major Updates and a whole version change to FBSD I really started liking it at around Ver 2.2.8 where there was quite a bit of changes that was making FBSD really great. I think think I met Jordan Hubbard who was the FBSD release engineer around that time. I still can't believe it's been that long already.

Back @Terrance:

Thanks for the link, I haven't kept up with the list for while and I see that my wife's laptop isn't on the list, but 2 of the models there are close enough. I should be able to get FreeBSD going as soon as I can get my wife a replacement. I had FreeBSD 6 going on a spare IBM ThinkPad I had at my last job, even got the wireless card to work... it was sweet.

I used to work with FreeBSD, but that was in the late 90's.

Great! check the Laptop Compatibility list for any issues with the laptop you plan to use. Here is the link http://laptop.bsdgroup.de/freebsd/

I've been tinkering about with FreeBSD since only fairly recent (5.1), and right now I've got 7 running on a virtual machine. But my dream is to commandeer my wife's laptop (it runs WinXP, but takes nearly 5 minutes from power-up to login), install 7 and configure it display Japanese. Of course, I would have to get her a replacement first.

Someday soon...

I've been involved in FreeBSD since version 1.5 and have been doing what I can in the PCBSD effort I've tapered off since the Births of my Two babies but hope slowly get back involved.
