I definitely would not start out in China unless there was a very strong reason to do so. Tackle markets like Hong Kong, Singapore, or possibly Taiwan first - where you have a chance of understanding what is going on and are supported by established business and legal systems.
I agree with your other choices, David, though I might also add Malaysia and, further afield, India and Sri Lanka. Of course, you could go into Malaysia through Singapore, too.
