I passed the July 13th request on to the Abercrombie campaign. That date would not work. They are asking if people would be willing to meet with him at the Abercrombie headquarters on Main Street, Wailuku at noon on July 6th. I thought that evening would be better and they are looking for evening dates, but I wanted to get feedback here for a noon meeting? We could also do a webex or ustream session at that time for people not able/willing to travel in to Wailuku at noon.

People's Fund - I believe there are websites for non-local versions of this. There certainly are for loans.
Public involvement in Technology - One of the things I like about Maui Makers is that it's technology focused. In a sense so are the various Sustainability groups. MHEF Recommendations - Does Sol or Alan have an interest in something like this?
Education Platform - I'd like to see something a bit more radical, perhaps with input from the Gates foundation, but thats probably more than he'll be able to get done in his first term, so it's a step in the right direction. Personally, in the context of promoting technology and innovation, some effort needs to be made to reach beyond the formal education system to engage regular citizens in understanding technology and venturing. This is one thing that is so impressive about the Silicon Valley. Lack of this knowledge and understanding in our policy makers, legislators, and the executive branch, and even in the Hawaii small and larger business community (e.g. the membership of the HI Business Roundtable, the bank and university economists) is what derailed Act 221 and will hold us back going forward. One idea that was articulated by Jay Fidell last year was to create a People's Fund - see http://thinktech.honadvblogs.com/2009/11/29/sunday-column-how-the-public-can-invest-in-our-future/ This would engage regular people in both understanding technology and venturing.
As an aside, there was a really interesting conference on Maui circa 1996 on Maui's HIgher Education Future. The TOC and summary from the proceedings is at http://mauienterpriseforum.net/mhef.pdf. Linda Lingle was Mayor at the time, and basically she did not pursue the recommendations since they were too threatening to the UH system.
