Event Description

Projects Seeking Input: Battery-Backed Solar Energy, Community Learning and Fabrication Center

This month, we are going to do something a little different. We'll have two shorter presentations from local projects that are looking for input of some kind.  So come prepared to give constructive feedback!

#1 Grid Tied Photovoltaic with Battery Backup
Solar photovoltaic generating systems are being installed at such a high rate that the aggregate installed capacity is greater than any single generator attached to Hawaii Electric Light Company's (HELCO) grid.  These systems are largely invisible to and uncontrollable by HELCO system operators, and complicate the task of keeping electricity supply and demand in balance--that is, keeping the grid stable.

Energy storage is one way to mitigate these issues, and distributed grid-connected solar with battery backup (PVBB) could be a cost-effective approach.  We will look at the cost effectiveness of PVBB versus centralized storage and other options.  What can proactive ratepayers do to ensure that everyone's electricity rates will be lowered and that the electricity will come from clean sources?

Ulrich Bonne is a chemical physicist. He moved to Hawaii after his 42-year “stint” as a Research Fellow at the Honeywell Labs in Minneapolis.  If you wish to prepare for the talk, Ulrich has posted some information at: http://alohafuels.pbworks.com/f/PB-14-ElectricityCostTrends.pdf.

#2 Community Learning and Fabrication Center
Michael Hess is developing plans for a Community Learning and Fabrication Center, an environment to spark interests in curiosity and exploration, providing innovative learning approaches outside the formal school system. Think of Earl's Garage, but Kona based. He's looking for interest and input in refining the plan towards a appropriate solution for our community.

Michael Hess is an independent mechanical engineer with a background in machine and product design. He has a strong interest in technical education. This pau hana is BYOB/potluck, so please bring a pupu and non-alcoholic beverage to share.  Reusable plates and cups are encouraged, as is taking home your own trash.

RSVP so we can plan for the number of people.

Agenda:
5:00-5:15 p.m. Networking
5:15-6:15 p.m. Presentation and Q&A
6:30-7:15 p.m. Pupus, drinks, and more networking
